The wonderful Russell Davies asked me to prepare a ten-minute musical interlude for Interesting 2008.
Inspired by the Conway Hall, bunting, school plays, amateur dramatics and nostalgia for our days spent in school orchestras and brass bands, we decided to form a 30 piece scratch recorder orchestra from members of the audience.
In ten minutes.
1:00 The dreaded 'audience participation' call to action
2:00 Revealing thirty-odd neon recorders (kindly supplied by The Guardian)
4:00 The first pupils: Gadney, Schulze, McClaren and Jones.
6:00 The assembled ensemble
8:00 The 'oh my God what have I done' moment
9:00 "Are we ready? Then we'll begin."
11:00 "Repeat after me, with feeling"
